The chipmaker's second-quarter results, published August 3, listed Rivian's R2 platform as a zonal-architecture and on-board-charging design win alongside year-over-year automotive growth.
onsemi named Rivian’s R2 platform as a zonal architecture design win in its second-quarter results on August 3, citing power components for distribution and conversion. The release said the win “extended leadership in automotive zonal architecture and on-board charging.”
The results carried no dollar value, no volume and no production date for the Rivian content, and Rivian issued no matching announcement.
Automotive was onsemi’s largest end market in the quarter at $781.3 million, up from $733.2 million a year earlier, according to the revenue breakdown in the company’s quarterly report. Total revenue was $1,603.5 million, 9 percent higher than a year before, with a GAAP gross margin of 38.4 percent and a non-GAAP gross margin of 39.3 percent. The company guided to between $1.65 billion and $1.75 billion for the third quarter.
The growth was not evenly spread across the business. The Power Solutions Group rose 19 percent year over year to $829.0 million and the Intelligent Sensing Group rose 7 percent to $228.8 million, while the Analog and Mixed-Signal Group fell 2 percent to $545.7 million.
Zonal designs replace a sprawl of function-specific control units with a smaller number of location-based controllers, each handling power and data for one region of the vehicle. That consolidation moves value toward suppliers of high-current switching and conversion parts, and it is the layer onsemi cited in claiming the Rivian program.
