DENSO and TÜV Rheinland Japan publish a battery passport data architecture paper
The two companies released a joint technical white paper on August 7 setting out the data definitions and IT architecture requirements that carmakers and battery makers face under the EU Battery Regulation and the Ecodesign Regulation.
DENSO and TÜV Rheinland Japan published a joint technical white paper on battery passports, the companies said on August 7.
The paper addresses the EU Battery Regulation and the Ecodesign Regulation, and covers what DENSO described as data definitions and IT architecture requirements. DENSO said battery passports were expected to become mandatory under the EU Battery Regulation in February 2027, and that the specifications were expected to continue evolving in the coming years.
The release set out the technical questions the paper treats as unresolved. They began with “mechanisms for uniquely identifying individual batteries,” and extended to managing data that is updated across a battery’s lifecycle, controlling which parties may reach it, and system architectures able to keep working across distributed data sources.
DENSO named the intended readers as the economic operators responsible for battery passport compliance, including vehicle manufacturers and battery manufacturers.
The paper follows a memorandum of understanding the two companies signed in September 2025 to promote digital product passports.
