Ford opened its AI assistant to 8 million owners and added Gemini in the cockpit

The assistant reads a vehicle's real-time telemetry and its owner's manual through the owner app, and Ford said the in-vehicle version would follow by 2027.

Ford said on August 10 that its AI assistant for Ford and Lincoln owners was ramping up more broadly across vehicle lines, reaching 8 million customers across all eligible nameplates. The rollout began in the first half of 2026 and is being delivered to owners’ apps in waves.

The assistant is reached from the owner app rather than the vehicle. Ford said that because the app is already linked to a specific vehicle, owners can ask a question without stating model year or trim, and can type a question or upload an image. Beyond searching the owner’s manual, the company said the assistant connected to the vehicle’s real-time telemetry through the app, letting it analyze current information such as tire pressure or oil life, monitor fuel or charge levels, decode a warning light, and indicate when service is due. Ford also cited step-by-step troubleshooting for minor faults.

Ford said the assistant would be integrated into select Ford and Lincoln vehicles by 2027, and described that as embedded intelligence rather than phone mirroring.

In the meantime the company is upgrading in-vehicle voice separately. Ford said it was rolling out Google Gemini as an opt-in alternative to Google Assistant in vehicles with its latest digital system, the Ford and Lincoln Digital Experience. It framed the two as companion technologies for now: Gemini for tasks in the vehicle such as navigation, messaging or cabin temperature, and the Ford assistant in the app for vehicle-specific questions. Ford said the embedded assistant would later use the same foundation, with Ford data and services layered on.

Why it mattersFord chose to ship this where the software already updates freely rather than wait for the vehicle, which buys reach now at the cost of leaving the in-car experience to a separate assistant until 2027.
