DENSO launched a battery digital product passport service for the EU regulation

DENSO said on August 25 that it had launched a digital product passport service for batteries, aimed at manufacturers that will have to comply with the European Battery Regulation.

The regulation, in force since August 2023, requires a battery passport from February 2027 for electric vehicle batteries, batteries for light means of transport and industrial batteries. DENSO said its service generates a passport for each battery product using the data model developed by the European Battery Pass-Ready consortium, and that end users read the data by scanning a QR code.

The company said the service carries an access control function that varies what is visible according to the type of user, distinguishing consumers from what it termed economic operators, which DENSO described as a response to data sovereignty concerns. The underlying record uses blockchain work the company has run since 2017, storing entries in a chained structure so that modifying one breaks consistency with related records. DENSO described the architecture as multi-connectable across several data platforms.

The company said it intends to extend the service to other digital product passports required under the European Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which came into force in July 2024. The launch follows a battery passport white paper DENSO published with TÜV Rheinland Japan earlier this month.
