China's software update engineering standard reached its approval draft
The industry ministry opened a one-week publicity period on the approval draft of a recommended national standard for road vehicle software update engineering, the last consultation step before a standard is issued.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology opened public comment on September 24 on the approval drafts of two recommended national standards, the first of which is Road Vehicles — Software Update Engineering. The notice was issued by the ministry’s Science and Technology Department and dated September 23.
The ministry said the relevant standardization technical bodies had completed drafting the standards under the standards revision plan, and that it was publishing them to hear views from all sectors. Comments close on September 30, a window of seven days.
The stage matters more than the length of the window. An approval draft is the version submitted for issuance, after technical drafting and earlier rounds of consultation have closed. A standard at this point is normally close to publication, and the text is unlikely to change substantially.
Software update engineering is the process discipline behind an over-the-air update campaign: how a manufacturer identifies what is on a vehicle, decides that an update is safe to apply, delivers it, and records what happened. The international standard covering the same ground is ISO 24089, which a supplier certified a software update management system against earlier this month.
The drafts themselves are not attached to the notice. The ministry directs readers to view them in the project publicity section of its standards information service platform, and asks that any views be fed back within the publicity period. One telephone number is given for questions.
The ministry did not name the second standard in the notice title.
