LG will supply the integrated cockpit for Renault's first production SDV van
LG Electronics said it combined the instrument cluster and infotainment system into one cockpit-domain controller for the New Trafic E-Tech Electric, which Renault built on its first mass-production software-defined vehicle architecture.
LG Electronics said on October 6 that it will supply its integrated cockpit solution for the Renault New Trafic E-Tech Electric, which it described as Renault Group’s first mass-produced commercial vehicle built on a software-defined vehicle architecture.
The part combines the instrument cluster and the infotainment system in one unit, which LG said serves as a key control platform for the cockpit domain. The cluster side carries driving information such as speed, revolutions per minute and warning indicators, while the infotainment side supports navigation and media playback, with both presented consistently across the vehicle’s displays.
LG set out the rationale in platform terms. Conventional vehicles distribute control functions across dozens of electronic control units dedicated to specific areas or systems, it said, while software-defined vehicles use high-performance computing and a centralized software architecture to integrate the control of multiple vehicle functions and can add or upgrade features through updates delivered over the air. The company said the consolidation helps carmakers reduce costs through component simplification and system optimization.
The two have worked together before. LG said Renault Group recognized it as an outstanding supplier in 2014, 2017 and 2020, and that the pair developed an Android-based automotive infotainment system in 2021.
LG gave no contract value, program volume or start-of-production date. Its three filings to Korea’s electronic disclosure system on October 6 and 7 were a clarification of a news report about its Bear Robotics subsidiary, its preliminary third-quarter results and a notice of its October 28 earnings call, none of which concerns the supply award. Renault Group has not published the award itself, which leaves LG’s release as the only first-party record.
