Toyota recalled 5,307 RAV4 plug-in hybrids over motor control software

The filing says the control program was inadequately studied, and that if the motor's initial learning at start-up does not complete, output control fails, the system may stop and the vehicle may become undriveable.

Toyota filed recall notification 5888 with Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on October 7, naming the motor control computer, listed under electrical equipment, as the defective part. The recall start date is October 8.

The filing says that in the plug-in hybrid system, study of the motor control computer’s program was inadequate, so that if the motor’s initial learning at start-up does not complete, motor output control is not carried out correctly while driving and an abnormality can be detected. The warning lamp then illuminates and, in the worst case, the system stops and the vehicle may become undriveable.

The remedy is to correct the motor control computer’s program to a countermeasure specification on all affected vehicles. The filing does not say by what route the correction reaches the car. Toyota’s own recall page for the same notification number says dealers will contact owners to arrange a booked appointment, and that the inspection and repair are free — a workshop visit rather than a remote update.

The recall covers 5,307 vehicles of a single type designation, 6LA-AXAP64, sold as the RAV4, across two chassis-number ranges of 1,440 and 3,867 cars. All of them were built between February 4 and September 4, 2026. Toyota reported seven defect reports and no accidents, and said the problem was identified from market information. The filing is signed by Kenta Kon, the company’s president.

Why it mattersA current-production plug-in hybrid was recalled within eight months of its first build dates for a control program that was not examined thoroughly enough, which places the defect in the calibration rather than in any part of the hardware.
