LG said TÜV Rheinland certified the Genesis GV90's communication unit to ASIL D

LG Electronics disclosed six in-cabin systems for the Genesis GV90, among them a central communication unit that carries the car's remote-control and update path and has been certified to the highest automotive functional-safety level.

LG Electronics said on October 8 that it is supplying six in-cabin systems to the Genesis GV90, the brand’s first full-size flagship SUV, and that one of them has been certified by TÜV Rheinland for compliance with ASIL D requirements under ISO 26262, the automotive functional-safety standard.

That system is central communication unit 2.0, which LG described as an integrated control unit enabling communication between the GV90’s key electronic control units and connectivity to external networks, and which supports remote control and over-the-air updates. ASIL D is the most demanding of the four risk classifications in ISO 26262.

The other five are a 24.6-inch variable popup central information display, which LG said is the first of its kind in a Genesis model and which unites the audio, video and navigation system with the instrument cluster at a 23.6-inch visible area while driving, rising 90 millimeters when the vehicle is stationary; an integrated infotainment system embedded in Hyundai Motor Group’s Pleos Connect, bringing together cluster, head-up display and AVN and supporting delivery of the Pleos Connect operating system and the Gleo AI voice assistant; the LG Automotive Content Platform, carrying Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, TVING, Haystack News and LG Channels, with Zoom, Rakuten TV and HappyKids planned; a second-generation rear-seat system with a 13.2-inch touch OLED panel; and an eight-inch console touch screen controlling climate, doors, seats, lighting, media and massage, which LG said supports cybersecurity capabilities and over-the-air updates.

Eun Seok-hyun, president of LG’s Vehicle Solution company, was quoted in the release. LG gave no contract value, and its two filings to Korea’s DART register on October 7 — preliminary third-quarter operating results and an investor-meeting notice — do not mention the division or the award.

Why it mattersThe unit that brokers traffic between a car's control units and the outside network is now the piece being certified to the strictest functional-safety level, which is a statement about where suppliers think the risk in a connected vehicle sits.
