Volkswagen's Cariad deepens Horizon Robotics tie-up for Level 3 driving in China
The Cariad-controlled joint venture Carizon gains white-box access to Horizon Robotics' AI foundation model, with conditional Level 3 deliveries targeted for late 2027.
Volkswagen Group China expanded its driver-assistance partnership with Horizon Robotics, giving Carizon — the joint venture majority-owned by VW’s software unit Cariad — white-box licensing access to Horizon’s AI foundation model.
The arrangement lets Carizon build a unified driving-AI stack of its own, integrating the licensed model with its C7H computing chip and its GAIA World Model data platform, rather than embedding a closed external system it cannot modify.
The production timeline is concrete: L2++ assisted driving reaches series production across seven new energy vehicle models from the third quarter of 2026, including the ID. UNYX 06 and 07, with conditional Level 3 deliveries targeted for the second half of 2027. Group CEO Oliver Blume and China chief Ralf Brandstätter both framed the deal as strengthening Volkswagen’s own technology base in its most competitive market.
For the supplier landscape, the structure is the signal: access to model internals — not just integration support — is becoming the price of winning a Western OEM’s China program.
