Volkswagen's CARIZON venture takes its first in-house L2++ system to series production
CARIAD said HS8, developed with Horizon Robotics, was the Volkswagen Group's first in-house full-scenario Level 2++ driver assistance system for China, and is planned for seven new energy models this year.
CARIAD said on August 13 that HS8, also called Hyper Sense 8, was the Volkswagen Group’s first in-house full-scenario Level 2++ driver assistance system for the Chinese market, and that the first vehicles carrying it were entering the market this year.
The system is built by CARIZON, CARIAD’s joint venture with Horizon Robotics. At its core is CARIZON’s Hyper Sense AI model, which the company said combined perception and decision-making in one end-to-end system, learning how traffic scenes develop rather than processing each part of a situation in isolation. CARIAD said the model could make decisions in under 0.16 seconds in real-world driving conditions.
Training and testing run on GAIA 2.0, CARIZON’s data and simulation platform, which CARIAD said generated virtual traffic situations including rare scenarios that are difficult or unsafe to reproduce on public roads. The company said engineers trained the system across up to 30 million simulated driving scenarios.
HS8 supports Urban Navigate on Autopilot, assisting with turns, merges, intersections and lane changes. CARIAD stated that as a Level 2++ system it remains driver supervised at all times, and that the driver stays responsible and must be ready to intervene.
CARIZON pairs its own software development and system integration with Horizon Robotics’ AI models and Journey 6-series computing hardware, in two configurations: camera-based, and a version adding LiDAR. The rollout starts with SAIC Volkswagen’s ID. ERA 5S, which uses the camera-based version, followed by the Jetta M6. The first LiDAR-equipped model is FAW-Volkswagen’s ID. AURA T6, which CARIAD said was also the first battery-electric vehicle, with LiDAR versions of the ID. UNYX 06 and ID. UNYX 07 to follow. From 2027, CARIAD said, the LiDAR solution is set to expand to further vehicles using the China Electronic Architecture, or CEA, which CARIAD described as a common electronics foundation across multiple models.
