Momenta's R7 world model will ship in SAIC-GM's Cadillac XT5 plug-in hybrid

Cadillac, part of SAIC-GM, and Momenta announced on August 12 that the new XT5 plug-in hybrid would be fitted with Momenta’s R7 world model. Momenta said it was the second vehicle program between the two companies, following a battery-electric SUV.

The company described R7 as having a cognitive framework for the physical world similar to a human’s, able to understand the physical properties of objects, the causal relationships in motion and the possible interactions between them. Momenta said that let the system make predictions and plans more consistent with how the physical world behaves, which it linked to stronger negotiation in traffic, smarter lane selection and more flexible progress through congestion.

Momenta put the data behind the model at more than 15 billion kilometers of real-world mileage, from which it said it had distilled more than 100 million pieces of what it calls golden data, alongside validation from work with global automakers. The company said this was what turned rare risks into situations the system could handle routinely.

Cao Xudong, Momenta’s chief executive, said the aim was not only smooth driving in everyday conditions but composure in the rare extreme scenarios, describing the goal as protection “in all road conditions.”

Wang Chendong, a vice president at SAIC-GM, said that winning in China meant finding a partner that understood Chinese roads better than the customer did.

Momenta did not give a start of production date for the XT5 PHEV.
