Teradar opened a German subsidiary to take terahertz sensing to European carmakers

Teradar announced on August 17 that it had established Teradar GmbH in Wiesbaden as its European headquarters, to serve as the hub for testing, commercialization and supply-chain development of its terahertz imaging sensors. The Boston-based company said the subsidiary follows a paid evaluation program with an unnamed German automaker announced on June 16.

The company said European chip manufacturers and automakers are targeting integration on vehicles from 2028, contingent on what it called timely updates to European regulations, and that regulatory support would be a key success factor. It named BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, CARIAD, STMicroelectronics, Valeo, Forvia-Hella and CLAAS as having voiced support for immediate compatibility studies on the technology, without describing any of them as a customer or program partner.

Teradar’s claims for the sensor are its own. It said terahertz imaging delivers twenty times the resolution of existing radar, works in fog, rain and snow, and does so in a solid-state design at a cost below lidar, addressing scenarios where cameras, radar and lidar fail at night, in poor weather, or when vulnerable road users are close to the vehicle. The release also pointed to more than 130 million euros of European public funding for safety-critical sensing and automated driving in adverse weather.

Why it matters: A sensing supplier making regulatory timing its stated gating factor is a reminder that perception hardware reaches vehicles on the standards calendar, not the engineering one.
