GM said nearly 750,000 Super Cruise vehicles now feed its eyes-off development

A technical explainer set out how the company is validating the eyes-off driving system it plans to launch on the Cadillac Escalade IQ, disclosing for the first time how much simulated driving the program runs.

General Motors published a technical explainer on August 18 describing how it is developing an eyes-off driving system, and used it to set out the scale of the program behind it.

The company said nearly 750,000 Super Cruise-enabled vehicles are on the road today, offered on more than 20 GM models in North America, and that more than one billion miles have been driven with the system. Super Cruise is included for three years when an equipped vehicle is bought, after which owners can pay for a plan starting at $39.99 a month.

GM said it has already begun testing the eyes-off system on hundreds of prototype vehicles fitted with the sensors and electronics needed to extend Super Cruise’s capabilities. It described a layered validation approach spanning closed-course work, supervised testing on public roads, and replay: engineers can pull specific scenarios from production and test fleets, run them again against updated software, and alter them to test further variations. The company said its engineers can simulate what amounts to a century of driving every day.

On timing, GM said it plans to launch the technology in 2028, first on the Cadillac Escalade IQ. A footnote to the same release qualified that, saying the company plans to introduce eyes-off capabilities as early as 2028, subject to development, validation and other factors.

Why it mattersThe scarce input for a system that lets a driver stop watching the road is not sensors but validated exposure, and GM is arguing that a large deployed fleet is the asset that gets it there.
