Rivian moved both R1 hardware generations and the R2 onto RivianOS 2

Rivian began rolling out software release 2026.31 on September 4, an over-the-air update the company described as the largest software change in the R1’s history.

The release moves the R1 cabin experience onto RivianOS 2, which Rivian said reaches every R1 on the road across both the first- and second-generation hardware architectures, and which also runs on the R2.

Rivian listed a rebuilt settings application with context-aware controls and universal search, repositionable quick controls and media player, a new vertical status bar, and real-time three-dimensional rendering of the vehicle and its surroundings built on Unreal Engine 5 for both the R1 and the R2. Information from Google Maps about police presence and speed cameras was integrated into in-vehicle navigation, drawn from local authorities, third-party sources and contributions from the Google Maps and Waze communities. A weather application and mobile live trips were made available to Connect+ subscribers.

The company said a common artificial-intelligence foundation it calls Rivian Unified Intelligence now spans the vehicle, the mobile application and service. Hybrid edge computing and local processing run on the R2 and the second-generation R1, which carry more compute, while both R1 generations receive expanded cloud-assisted voice control and revised driver-display hierarchies.

Rivian said privacy controls across all generations include a hotword toggle, limits on location sharing, and adjustment of driver-profile data.
