CARIAD revenue rose 31% but its operating loss, now €1.32 billion, still exceeds it

Volkswagen Group's nine-month results put CARIAD's sales revenue at €1,257 million against €960 million a year earlier, and its operating result at minus €1,316 million against minus €1,500 million.

Volkswagen Group published its results for the first nine months of 2026 on October 29. The divisional table records CARIAD, the group’s software company, with sales revenue of €1,257 million against €960 million in the same period of 2025, and an operating result of minus €1,316 million against minus €1,500 million.

The accompanying text says CARIAD improved its operating result by €0.2 billion and that revenue increased 31 percent to €1.3 billion, and attributes that development to continued implementation of the transformation program and sustained cost discipline — the company’s own explanation of its own figures. The release does not state that the smaller loss followed from the revenue growth.

For scale, the group’s own operating result over the nine months was €71 million against €5,408 million a year earlier, a margin of 0.0 percent against 2.3 percent.

Why it mattersA captive software company whose revenue grew by a third while it still lost roughly a euro for every euro it earned puts a public price on building a vehicle software stack in house.
