Mercedes-Benz extended its NVIDIA partnership and paired MB.OS with Alpamayo and Halos

The two companies said they would jointly develop the next generation of driver assistance and automated driving, putting NVIDIA's compute and sensor architecture, full-stack driving software and parallel safety stack alongside the Mercedes operating system.

Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA said on October 16 that they would extend their partnership to jointly develop the next generation of driver assistance and automated driving systems. Both companies issued the announcement; the Mercedes-Benz version carried a Stuttgart and Santa Clara dateline.

The companies described a stack assembled from four named parts. Mercedes-Benz contributes its own vehicle operating system, MB.OS, which the release said supports new driving functions and over-the-air updates. NVIDIA contributes Hyperion, its in-vehicle computing and sensor architecture; Alpamayo Stack, described as full-stack driving software with AI reasoning capabilities supporting point-to-point urban assistance, active safety and automated parking; and Halos, which the release said “adds to the Mercedes-Benz safety foundation, including a parallel safety stack that adds redundancy and guardrails.” Together, the companies said, those technologies support advanced driver assistance and the development of future SAE Level 4 applications, including robolimousines.

Jörg Burzer, the Mercedes-Benz Group board member responsible for development and procurement, called NVIDIA the company’s most important strategic partner in automated driving and said the two had developed the first Mercedes-Benz assistance system for urban point-to-point driving for the western world. The release also recorded Mercedes-Benz using NVIDIA technology for vehicle engineering simulation and inside MO360, its production system.

Neither company named a vehicle program, a start-of-production date or any commercial terms. NVIDIA filed no current report with the Securities and Exchange Commission alongside the announcement; Mercedes-Benz Group is listed in Frankfurt and its German disclosure record was not checked.

Why it mattersA vehicle operating system is only as capable as the stacks it is allowed to host, so what Mercedes-Benz admits onto MB.OS is the clearest available signal of how it intends to prove automated driving in the next model cycle.
