Mercedes-Benz dated its urban point-to-point assistance and named UN R171 as the basis
Three days after announcing the system in the abstract, Mercedes-Benz said MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO will be orderable in Germany from the first half of 2027, reachable by over-the-air update for existing cars, and portable across the EU on the strength of a UNECE regulation for driver control assistance systems.
Mercedes-Benz said on October 21 that MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO, its urban point-to-point driving assistance system, will be available to order in Germany from the first half of 2027, with access through a special early-access program for use in Stuttgart and Munich from the end of 2026.
Existing customers with eligible vehicles will be able to install the function with an over-the-air update, the company said, and a complimentary one-month trial is planned through the Mercedes-Benz Store. Mercedes-Benz described itself as the first carmaker to offer such a system in Germany, in addition to China and the United States.
The regulatory basis is stated explicitly. A UNECE working group on automated, autonomous and connected vehicles previously approved UN R171, which sets out provisions for approving vehicles equipped with driver control assistance systems. On that basis, the release said, the function could also be introduced in all EU markets in future without further regulatory approval.
On the hardware, the system uses 27 sensors — ten cameras, five radar sensors and twelve ultrasonic sensors — supplying raw data to a high-performance computer capable of processing up to 254 TOPS. It combines the MB.OS vehicle operating system with NVIDIA Hyperion in-vehicle compute and sensor architecture, the Halos safety system and Alpamayo Stack software.
It remains an SAE Level 2 system requiring the driver to stay continuously attentive, on what Mercedes-Benz calls a hands-on cooperative steering concept. The company announced the underlying NVIDIA partnership on October 16 without naming a vehicle program, a start-of-production date or commercial terms; this release supplies the dates and the regulatory route, not the terms.
