Momenta said Dongfeng's Aeolus L8+ shipped with its R7 world model usable at delivery
The supplier said the SUV, which went on sale on October 23, is the first Dongfeng own-brand model to carry its R7 world model, active when the car is handed over and upgraded afterwards over the air.
Momenta said the Dongfeng Aeolus L8+, which went on sale on October 23, is the first model from Dongfeng’s own brand to carry its R7 world model, with the system available at delivery and upgraded afterwards by over-the-air update.
The supplier described the vehicle as a mainstream family sport utility vehicle positioned as a dual flagship for assisted driving and comfort, with up to 700 TOPS of computing power.
Momenta said R7 departs from the conventional perception-then-response chain and is built on an understanding of the physical world, predicting the movement logic of objects and the causal relationships between them to make decisions closer to those of an experienced driver.
At the launch event, Momenta said a production L8+ covered 73 kilometers with no takeovers on the 108 bends near Mount Everest, at an altitude of nearly 5,000 meters, under invigilation and a single-shot live broadcast by China Media Group. It said the route included hairpin turns, mixed truck and livestock traffic, construction lane closures and sections without a high-definition map.
The company said its vehicles in production had passed 1.3 million and cumulative mileage was approaching 20 billion kilometers, and that its Level 3 production projects and Level 4 operating fleets continued to supply long-tail data for training.
On vehicle control, Momenta said its braking model cut the measured jerk of a stop by a factor of ten, made start response on gradients at least 300 milliseconds faster, and shortened the delay in starting at traffic lights by 400 milliseconds.
Momenta’s release does not say which versions of the L8+ carry the system, and Chinese trade coverage of the launch reported that the R7 package is fitted to the lidar-equipped trims rather than across the range.
Momenta published the account on October 24. Dongfeng’s own Aeolus brand site carried its own account of the launch, dated October 26, and lists the L8+ from 139,900 yuan.
