Stellantis filed a Japanese software recall over a module that blanks the speedometer

Stellantis Japan told the transport ministry it would reflash the body control module on 1,798 Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat vans after a control-program fault left the instrument cluster dead at engine start.

Stellantis Japan filed a recall with Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on October 29 under number 外-4254, with the recall starting the same day. The ministry published the filing table the same day.

The filing identified the faulty part as an electrical device, the body control module, and recorded the condition as a non-conformity with the technical standards. Because the module’s control program is inadequate, it said, communication between the body control module and the meter cluster may not take place properly at engine start, so the meter cluster may fail to start and the speedometer and other indications may not be displayed. The remedy is to update the body control module’s control program to a countermeasure specification on all affected vehicles. Neither document says whether the reprogramming is delivered remotely or at a dealer, but the ministry’s remedy diagram requires a physical marking on every vehicle repaired: an identification sticker near the driver’s-side door lock striker on the Fiat, and white paint above the seventh digit of the chassis number on the Peugeot and Citroen.

The recall covers 1,798 vehicles across six type designations and three models: the Peugeot Rifter, the Citroen Berlingo and the Fiat Doblo, imported between November 27, 2025 and June 12, 2026. The manufacturers named are Automobiles Peugeot and Automobiles Citroen in France and FCA Italy S.p.A. in Italy.

Stellantis Japan recorded one reported case and no accidents, and said the defect had been discovered on information from the home country. Owners are to be notified by direct mail and other means, repair businesses through the trade association’s journal, and the campaign published on the company’s own website.

Why it mattersA software defect recorded as a non-conformity with vehicle technical standards is not one a manufacturer can fold quietly into the next release, because the regulator now holds a dated record of the fault, the remedy and every vehicle it covers.
