Volvo Cars will close the Stockholm office it opened for software and AI work

Volvo Cars said on August 31 that it would move the majority of its Stockholm office’s responsibilities to its headquarters in Gothenburg and close the Stockholm site on March 1, 2027. Approximately 450 employees are currently based there, and the company said the transition would happen gradually until the office closes.

The site’s purpose is what places the decision on the software beat. Volvo Cars said it established the Stockholm office to reach critical talent and strengthen key capabilities during a phase of its transformation, and that since then the office had played a significant role in building expertise in areas including “software development, AI and digital customer experiences.” The company said the capabilities built there continue to be important to it.

The stated rationale was organizational rather than financial in the first instance: concentrating resources across fewer sites to simplify the business, reduce complexity and increase the speed of cross-functional collaboration. The release added that the change would generate cost efficiencies supporting the company’s long-term ambitions.

The release did not state a cost figure, a headcount reduction or any job losses, and describes the change as a relocation of responsibilities rather than a redundancy program. Volvo Cars said it would manage the process in dialogue with employees and employee representatives. Volvo Car AB is listed, and the announcement was labeled investor news on the company’s own media site, but it was not filed as a regulatory disclosure. The company’s investor archive classifies its most recent regulatory filing as the second-quarter report of July 17; the August 19 change to its executive management team is classified there as non-regulatory, as is Monday’s announcement.
