The month vehicle software got its first mandatory rulebooks: China set a national driver-assistance standard, the US moved on federal automated-vehicle rules and granted the first exemption for a car built without a steering wheel, and BMW settled its compute silicon for a decade.

Nikkei Asia’s article on a Honda-Nissan common vehicle operating system dates from July 2025. Corrected here on August 14, 2026. The same pass re-synced this briefing with the articles it mirrors: stale headlines that predated later corrections (the Zoox exemption is "commercial", not "federal"; the Q2 vulnerability line needs its "High-severity" qualifier; the ID. AURA T6 is not called "the first car" on CEA), and standfirsts that had drifted from condensation into paraphrase and now carry the article's own wording. MIIT inspectors are described as randomly selecting sample vehicles, not seizing them. No new facts were introduced.

Correction · August 2, 2026: An earlier version of the Tesla entry read "~$791M annualized". Tesla does not publish an FSD revenue figure, and the number should not have appeared. The entry now carries the subscription growth the company does report.

Why it matters: A decade-long silicon commitment effectively fixes BMW’s E/E architecture roadmap and shows compute suppliers graduating from parts vendors to platform partners.
