China stopped describing what vehicle software should do and started making it a condition of sale: four ministries opened a year-long inspection campaign over driver-assistance validation, cybersecurity and update logging, a draft traffic law would move the answer for an autonomous-driving violation from the driver to the manufacturer, and a mandatory cryptography standard went out for comment. In the same week Waymo and BMW each published the architecture underneath their driving software, and Porsche sold the consultancy it had spent a decade building.

Four Chinese ministries opened a year-long audit of vehicle software validation A joint notice from MIIT and three sister ministries launched a one-year national inspection campaign that makes driver-assistance validation, cybersecurity and update logging conditions of market access. Why it matters: China has moved update logging, driver-assistance validation and vehicle cybersecurity from guidance into an enforcement program whose sanctions reach a manufacturer’s ability to sell at all.
China’s draft traffic law would make carmakers answer for autonomous-driving violations A revision of the Road Traffic Safety Law given a first reading on August 25 adds a chapter that shifts enforcement to the manufacturer or importer when a violation happens with the autonomous function switched on. Why it matters: It is the first time China has proposed to settle in statute who answers for a traffic offense committed by software rather than by a driver.
Waymo published the ten architecture rules behind 200 million driverless miles Waymo set out in its own words the ten decisions behind the Waymo Driver, and used them to reject both camera-only sensing and pure end-to-end neural driving. Why it matters: Waymo has put on the record an architecture that keeps an independent, rule-checked veto over its own neural driving model, which is the opposite of the end-to-end direction much of the industry has been moving in.
BMW made its new active-safety suite standard on a single central driving computer BMW Group said every new active safety, automated driving and parking function arriving with the Neue Klasse runs on one water-cooled computer carrying roughly 20 times the processing power of the outgoing system. Why it matters: Consolidating assistance, automated driving and parking onto one computer turns each new safety function into a software release rather than another control unit, and BMW is now shipping that arrangement as standard equipment.
Porsche sold its IT consultancy MHP to TCS and signed a five-year AI partnership Porsche agreed to sell the 4,500-person management and IT consultancy MHP to Tata Consultancy Services, and signed a five-year deal under which TCS will run a dedicated AI center for the carmaker. Why it matters: Carmakers have spent a decade building software and consulting capacity in-house, and this is one of them selling that capacity to a services group and buying the output back on a contract.

- Nine automakers recalled 4.27 million cars in China, six of them partly over the air — one day of filings over a hard-to-find emergency door release, and a public register of who can reach an installed fleet by software
- China opened comment on a mandatory standard for automotive cryptography — approved cryptography for update packages, staged secure boot, and authentication for whoever writes calibration parameters through the diagnostic port
- MIIT said inadequately validated vehicle designs will be barred from the market — a vice minister tied recent incidents to aggressive designs shipped without adequate testing, alongside a drafted five-year plan for intelligent connected new-energy vehicles
- Three Chinese suppliers put by-wire chassis into series production on the same day — Bethel, Tuopu and Huayu each reported brake- or steer-by-wire systems reaching mass production in interim results disclosed on August 28
- CISA flagged three flaws in Bendix brake ECUs that can cut ABS and steering assist — a stack overflow that can be used to run code and inject CAN traffic, with replacement firmware named for all eleven affected part numbers
- Kaspersky described malware that reached car head units through the update client — the unit’s own legitimate update component installed the payload
- Hyundai set 2028 for Level 2+ on its first mass-produced SDV — the first time the software strategy has carried a model, a launch year and a compute budget, including a 100-megawatt training data center from 2029
- NHTSA widened its GM brake probe to every vehicle sharing the eBoost system — an estimated 1.16 million vehicles, escalated because owner reports do not match the manufacturer’s account of how the failure presents
- NHTSA sought clearance to test whether driver monitoring systems detect drowsiness — the agency said no consensus method exists for testing drowsiness detection, and that the European protocol leaves its own test conditions unspecified
- NHTSA filed a third driver study of production cockpit software since August 21 — an eye-tracked, on-road study, filed with the admission that the agency’s cockpit guidance predates large screens, gesture input and in-vehicle commerce
- Smart Eye’s automotive revenue more than doubled as the EU driver-monitoring rule bit — 128 percent organic growth, with royalties from cars already in production up more than 200 percent in the quarter
- DENSO launched a battery digital product passport service for the EU regulation — a shipping compliance product ahead of the European Battery Regulation’s February 2027 deadline, not a pilot
- China set out a digital identity system for every traction battery — a per-battery record under the 2026 to 2030 plan, so a part’s origin can be traced and its destination checked
- Horizon’s Journey 6B won a German group’s global platform through supplier neueHCT — a front-view camera module across several models of a mainstream German group’s global passenger-car platform, with production from 2027
- Joyson booked 44.9 billion yuan of new lifetime design wins in the first half — assisted driving, cockpit and data-recorder systems for European, Japanese and Korean carmakers, while revenue fell 7.4 percent
- ThunderSoft’s automotive revenue rose 18.8% as it recast its stack around an AI OS — the company describes the vehicle operating system itself as having to run models, schedule agents and govern their permissions
- NavInfo’s vehicle-data compliance revenue rose 56% as its chip and ADAS lines shrank — 618 million yuan, about a third of group revenue, from a business China’s data rules created
- XPeng’s services revenue nearly doubled on contract engineering for a carmaker — up 93.9 percent, at a gross margin six times that of its own vehicles
- Great Wall’s profit more than halved as it shipped a new driver-assistance generation — Coffee Pilot 4 and a cockpit operating system it plans to push to more models over the air, funded out of a 53 percent fall in profit
- Keboda won zonal controller work and put 100 million euros into its European plants — zonal control unit design wins at two Chinese electric-vehicle makers, and capital approved for the German and Czech subsidiaries before the volume arrives
- Xiaomi unveiled a 3nm driving chip it says runs 200-billion-parameter models — presented on August 24 with commercial use set for 2027, by a company whose cars run NVIDIA silicon today
- Geely recalled 92,915 cars for a lidar fault it will trace by cloud diagnostics — the affected vehicles are to be found by reading early diagnostic signals from Geely’s cloud platform, as filed with the regulator
- TIER IV put Autoware under Open Invention Network 2.0 patent non-aggression — patent exposure is the usual reason a legal department refuses an open-source driving stack, and this removes it for the most widely used one
- Gatik raised $200 million for its driverless middle-mile freight software — a Series D led by the Qatar Investment Authority and Koch Disruptive Technologies, with an order count and an on-time rate the company had not published before
- A US national lab was reported to be testing Chinese lidar for security flaws — Idaho National Laboratory, in a review reportedly funded by industry rather than government, according to TechCrunch
